The world is not devoid of contentions. Unfortunately, atrocities occur on a daily basis all over the globe: an oil conglomerate dumps masses of oil in the Ecuadorian jungle which has polluted the rivers, killed the wildlife and sickened the people in the nearby villages; and the citizens of Syria are being exterminated and refused access to medical care by their own government. Plenty of people complain about the problems the world over but very few do anything to change them. Avaaz, or voice (which it translates to in various Middle Eastern languages), was formed in 2007 with the intent of shattering notions and preconceptions of activism . Avaaz, a civic organization with very humble beginnings continues to flourish, and shine a light on issues that otherwise would remain hidden in the shadows.
Avaaz was birthed in 2007 in the United States of America. The idea for the online civic organization was the brain child of Ricken Patel,Jeremy Hamins,Tom Pravda, Eli Prisner, MoveOn.org and Les Republica. Ricken Patel is the acting Chief Executive Officer and President of Avaaz. Patel was exposed to global activism and has implemented negotiation tactics he acquired as an employee of the International Crisis Group. An exemplary leader is not defined by their role with the company but by the impact the company has on the world. Avaaz has over forty seven million members, at the time of this article, and members continue to sign up daily.
Avaaz, allows anyone around the world who has access to the internet and a worthy cause to glean support.Causes that would otherwise be ignored now have the spotlight on an international platform. Avaaz, is much more than a civic organization. It is a beacon of hope to the hopeless, a voice for the unheard, a champion for the underdog.
